The crossroads of the world

Panama has all the potential to develop into a strategic business location, besides the obvious real estate growth it is seeing. The banking sector is the second largest in the world, the Panama Canal and the Colon Free Zone are large economic drivers. Add the geographical position, tax exemption and cosmopolitan Panama City and you get a Latin American hub.

Many international companies have recognized the economic dynamism and potential of the country in the last years. Over a 100 companies have offices in Panama. Dell, Hewlett Packard, Caterpilar are setting up world-class service hubs.

Dell has 2,000 employees at the Howard air base. “Panama is very strategic and close to the areas to which we provide services - Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean - and has always been a service economy,” says Mercedes Morris, corporate communications officer for Dell Panama.

Tourism in Panama is one of the main sources of foreign funds into the country. If demand for tourism services continues to grow in the way it has been for the past decade, accompanied by a similar expansion and diversification of tourism products and services, there is a great opportunity for the country to remain one of the leading destinations in Central America and the Caribbean.

The total number of visitors to the Republic of Panama in 2007, was 1,428,395 persons, which is the highest amount registered in the history of the country, and a 17.6% increase over the previous year. During the past seven years, the average yearly growth in the number of visitors was 13.2% per year.
